In 2009, the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh passed the Consumers’ Protection Act 2009, which was widely welcomed by the people, as Act No. 26 in the Grand Parliament. The Protection of Consumer Rights and Development under this Act is an authority program of the Government. Under this Act, the National of Consumer’s directorate Right Protection was established in 2009 as a Quasi Judiciary.
The directorate of Consumer Protection is playing an important role in the implementation of this law at the field level. As a people-friendly organization, the directorate is always striving to ensure transparency and accountability.
The protection and development of consumer rights under this Act is an authority program of the government. Since its inception, the department has been conducting regular market surveillance activities to remedy and prevent anti-consumer rights activities. Through these activities, anti-consumer activities and crime are being suppressed as well as increasing public awareness and preventing adulteration and playing an important role in protecting public health.
In case of purchase of any product or service, the deceived consumer can lodge a complaint with this department under section 6 (1) of the Act. If the crime is proved on the basis of the complaint, 25 per cent of the fine collected in the administrative system is immediately paid to the complainant.
The National Consumers’ Right Protection Department, Kushtia District Office is playing an important role in the implementation of the Consumers’ Right Protection Act 2009 at the field level. As a people-friendly organization, the department is always striving to ensure transparency and accountability, including providing prompt service to the people in the implementation of this law. The department has been conducting market monitoring activities under the Consumers’ Right Protection Act-2009 to prevent anti-consumer rights activities at all levels in economic and social development.
In order to create public awareness about Consumer Rights Protection Act 2009, posters, leaflets and pamphlets have been distributed in districts, upazilas and unions and several seminars have been organized.
World Consumer Rights Day is being observed on March 15 every year with due dignity. In order to increase awareness and ensure transparency, regular public hearings and exchange of views meetings are being organized with consumers and businessmen.
One of the goals of the present government is to easily reach the doorsteps of the people.
